  2. What makes the paintings great is not the artwork in and of itself. What make's them great is it was the first time representaions like these had been done. Kind of like Harper Lee's To kill a Mockingbird. In and of itself not a masterful novel. What makes it great is that it was the first time a modern social commentary such as this had been published. For me, this is the essence of the importance of these paintings.
